Visualize and Design Your Serverless Application

Introduction:

Silver Oak University IEEE Student Branch, in collaboration with AWS Cloud Clubs, organised an event titled "Visualise and Design Your Serverless Application." This event aimed to introduce participants to the world of serverless architecture, covering its foundational principles, practical applications, and benefits of building scalable, efficient and cost-effective serverless solutions.

About the Speaker:

The event was conducted by Mr. Gunnar Grosch, a Principal Developer Advocate at AWS, Sweden. Mr. Gunnar has played a pivotal role in shaping the serverless landscape at AWS and he brought his valuable insights on how to visualise and design robust serverless applications.

About the Session:

  • Date: 27th August 2024
  • Time: 1:45 PM to 3:45 PM
  • Venue: Online
  • Participants: 123

The event commenced with an exhilarating introduction by Mr. Gunnar Grosch, where he expertly guided participants through the intricacies of serverless computing, beginning with a detailed explanation of what serverless—a cloud-native development model that allows developers to build and run applications without managing servers.

Additionally, he delved into the types of applications that can be built using serverless architecture from simple APIs and microservices to complex, event-driven systems. The discussion then highlighted  benefits of adopting a visual approach to building solutions, such as reduced operational overhead, automatic scaling, and cost efficiency. Moving further, he introduced the AWS serverless toolbox, featuring services like AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Step Functions and Amazon DynamoDB, demonstrating how these tools can be integrated to build powerful serverless applications.

During the session, the expert demonstrated the power of serverless computing by building a live application from scratch, showcasing its seamless functionality. This hands-on approach provided participants with practical insights into real-world implementation, allowing them to grasp the core concepts of serverless computing in action.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where Mr. Grosch expertly addressed participants' questions and provided further clarity on visualisation of application architecture. A token of appreciation was presented to him in gratitude for his valuable insights. The expertise and guidance provided by Mr. Gunnar Grosch facilitated a comprehensive understanding of serverless and its practical implementation.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the event provided participants with deep insights into serverless architecture, and the tools available within the AWS ecosystem. The session was both informative and practical, equipping attendees with the knowledge and skills needed to design and build their serverless applications.

This event saw success under the essential guidance and support of Dr. Satvik Khara, Dean, Diploma Engineering, SOU; Head, Department of Computer Engineering, SOCET; IEEE Senior Member; Chairperson, SIGHT, IEEE Gujarat Section; Secretary, Computer Society, IEEE Gujarat Section; and Founding Member, Silver Oak University IEEE Student Branch.
