The event “Black Coding” was the first technical event by IEEE SOCET SB. This event was held on 22nd July 2017. The event was conducted with a vision to give students a new challenge in their coding skills. The name of the event itself suggests about what was the event all about. More than 100 participants registered for this event. The event was divided into three different stages.

Round – 1

The first round started at 10:00 AM. All students were given entry into their respective lab.  After logging in to their respective computer the first round began. In the first round participants faced multiple choice question. They found it easy to crack the answer. The first round was finished in about 10 min. As the result were declared, it was seen many participants were selected for the 2nd round.

Round – 2

The second round was all about finding errors and successfully running the code. There were some mistakes in the code which the participants had to find. Participants were given fifteen minutes to find the errors in the code. After participants found out all the errors, they were given only one chance to run the program. Participants took some time to figure out the errors but eventually completed the task in allotted time. Some of the participants couldn’t compete with others and as a result didn’t get the chance to participate in next round.

Round – 3

The last round was the one where the skills of the participants were tested. Participants were given a question, they had to write the code on screen, but with a twist which was that the monitor was OFF! Participants had an option to write the program logic on paper and write it on screen afterwards. After they were finished writing the program on screen, they would call the IEEE coordinator to switch ON the screen and run the program. This was the toughest challenge they faced in the competition. Participants were given 45 minutes to write and execute the program.

After the third round ended, winners were declared. All the participants were given certificate for participation. Certificates were given by the the Branch Counselor to the all participants and winners.

WINNERS

1 – Kartik Thakkar of 3rd sem F division from department of computer engineering secured the 1st prize

2 – Vinay Patel of 5th sem C division from department of computer engineering secured the 2nd prize

3 – Patel Dharmik 3rd sem E division from department of computer engineering secured the 3rd prize

Conclusion

Even though it rained heavily on the day of event, the willingness and the spirit of participants to participate in the “Black Coding” were firm as mountain. Participants showed up in high enthusiastic mood in the event. Coordinators were also happy with participation of students. The first IEEE technical event was a grand success.
